The yeah yeah yeahs, live at the st james, wednesday july 12 reviewer: josh adams photos by throw your toys neonsleep crazy as the yeah yeah yeahs stepped onstage and let rip. karen o is one of a kind. perhaps the only person in the world to look good with a bowl haircut she exploded onstage in a plethora of shrieks, jump kicks, punches and general tomfoolery. the crowd kept begging for more and each time, she delivered. nick zinner was amazing, his signature distorted fuzz and dirty riffs coming across even better in a live setting. brian chase was solid, hidden behind the drum kit perhaps keeping karen o and zinner in check, making sure they didn't let things get too out of hand. the band ripped through tracks off the new album but also kept an even balance in playing tracks from 2003's `fever to tell' and even stretching back to 2001's self titled ep. personal highlights included art star and miles away off the self titled ep, filthy pieces of classic garage artcore transferring over to the live stage brilliantly. playing for 90 minutes, the crowd was left exhausted, but wanting more. a three-song encore ensured this band would be stuck in our memories for a long time, playing the ultra popular maps and ending with the spastic date with the night basically, this was one of the best gigs seen in new zealand in the past couple of years. an absolute treat.
