The third member of the catching trio, ramon castro c8, th + 2 ; is also acceptable. at the corners, broussard 1b4 ; and rolen 3b5 ; are excellent, with versatile freddy sanchez 3b5, ss8, 2b7 ; sharing the middle infield with rookie kinsler 2b7 ; and veteran alex cintron 2b7, ss8 ; . melky cabrera of3, 33 arm ; , was the draft fairy springing for the defensive upgrade; it'll be needed because greg norton of1, 1b3 ; will see a lot of outfield time, but there are also legions david ortiz: stalwart of of2's with decent arms nixon, both greg norton 1-0-0-0, 10 hits, 4 francoeur, crisp, kielty ; available. catalanotto is an walks ; and frank catalanotto 4 0s, of2 as well, but his 29 arm is weak. 10 hits, 4 walks, 3 31s ; were brought aboard to provide even more veteran taken as a whole, this is a decent, workmanlike leadership and solidify the outfield; defense which will regularly be fielding two. the trot nixon 3 0s, 9 hits, 5 walks, l-7 ; and mediocre middle infield will yield the occasional jeff francoeur 1-4-5, 9 hits, l + 4 r-3 ; will also e4 or e6 extend innings or lose a close game see time in various lineups, as will bobby kielty late, but mostly this defense is good enough. 4 0s, 9 hits, 3 walks l + 7 r-7 ; . ben broussard bench: 3.0 1-5-6, 10 hits, 2 walks, l-11 ; will be the starting more toys to play with. first baseman, but there may be some concern for this position in the future he appears to there will usually be at least six bench options, have been reduced to a part time dh pinch an embarassment of riches most of them actuhitter in seattle. gerald laird 4 0s, 11 hits, 2 ally able to do some stuff. alex cintron 3 0s, 11 walks, l + 9 r-7 ; has the most games available hits ; is good for pinch hitting. there is also mr. at catcher and a surprisingly good card, but his monocarpic, fernando tatis 1-3-6-6-6, 9 hits, 3 shifts hamper him except against board lefties. his main platoon partner, chris snyder 3 0s, 10 walks, l + 4, but only a handful of crucial abs ; . former starting cf coco crisp 32 ssn with 26 hits, 3 walks ; is acceptable at the plate. sba's ; , who lost his job to cabrera, is still here. overall this is a competent offense with good obp skills and suitable power guys. team speed is good without a lot of actual stealing ability. this offense should be enough to support the superior pitching staff. there are many options for pinch hitting, pinch running and defensive replacements galore. this is definitely a bench built with the playoffs in mind. these guys must really be serious. some of it may be used the midseason trading period, maybe to bulk up the bullpen. we'll see.
For the family, owning the kings has become "the ultimate labor of love because it's become part of their sense of self and identity, " says the kings' thomas. that spirit has trumped the efforts of major corporations such as disney, time warner, and news corp., all of whom trumpeted "synergy" as the reason behind their ownership of professional sports teams. but those efforts largely failed--with their fans and shareholders alike harshly critical. the maloofs, on the other hand, have used the kings and the palms to build their own brand, customer by customer. "they have helped change the perspective of owners as sit-in-the-luxury-box hidden faces to out-in-front faces of the organization, " says cuban, who has cultivated an image similar to the maloofs' in dallas. "their fans and customers know exactly where the buck stops, and that is critical to the success of any business." already, the maloofs are looking ahead to next season, when the kings will play two preseason games in china against the houston rockets, whose star center is yao ming. "the maloofs approached us with an idea about staging a concert in tiananmen square, and we're busy at work with that concept, " says nba entertainment president adam silver. "they are among the most creative and passionate owners in the league." despite their incessant bonhomie, this has been a difficult winter for the brothers. in january, their uncle phil--one of the family's last links to their father--suffered a heart attack. joe quit smoking cigarettes, and he and gavin curtailed their nonstop travel to stand vigil. phil's eventual recovery notwithstanding, the episode was a not-so-subtle reminder that heart disease and premature death ; are part of the family legacy. the maloofs also have made some moves that are distinctly not fanfriendly. claiming that their cable television carrier, fox sports net bay area, was low-balling them, the brothers refused to sign a new contract, leaving the kings without a cable deal. not only did they forfeit millions in revenue, but their fans now see fewer games on television. absent a cable contract, the maloofs have threatened to start their own 24hour regional sports network, which would feature the kings and the sacramento monarchs, the women's national basketball assn. team they own, as well as minor-league baseball and college sports. in addition, the maloofs are beginning to campaign for a new arena. but in this they are on the defensive. arco, privately built in 1988 for about million, is already the third-oldest facility in the nba and lacks many of the amenities--fancy eateries, plentiful club seats, plush luxury suites--that are de rigueur in nba arenas and, not so incidentally, boost club revenue. to counter this disadvantage, the maloofs have raised average ticket prices "from the bottom third of the nba right into the top five overall, " according to the sacramento bee. in 2002, mayor heather fargo proposed the creation of a sports and entertainment district in downtown sacramento, anchored by a 0-million.

The total number of heads in her sample. in our narrative, y 32. we emphasize that p [0, 1] is fixed but unknown. robin's goal is to draw inferences about this fixed but unknown quantity. we consider three questions that she might ask: 1. what is the true value of p? more precisely, what is a reasonable guess as to the true value of p? 2. 0.5? specifically, is the evidence that p 0.5 so compelling that robin can comfortably accuse arlen of impropriety? 3. what are plausible values of p? in particular, is there a subset of [0, 1] that robin can confidently claim contains the true value of p? the first set of questions introduces a type of inference that statisticians call point estimation. we have already encountered in chapter 7 ; a natural approach to point estimation, the plug-in principle. in the present case, the plug-in principle suggests estimating the theoretical probability of success, p, by computing the observed proportion of successes, y 32 n 100 the second set of questions introduces a type of inference that statisticians call hypothesis testing. having calculated p 0.32 0.5, robin is inclined to guess that p 0.5. but how compelling is the evidence that p 0.5? let us play devil's advocate: perhaps p 0.5, but chance produced "only" y 32 instead of a value nearer ey np 100 0.5 50. this is a possibility that we can quantify. if y binomial n 100; p 0.5 ; , then the probability that y will deviate from its expected value by at least |50 - 32| 18 is p 50| 18 ; p y and texas holdem poker.

In all respects science is logically incompatible with the belief in a nonmaterial intelligent entity that controls the universe and is called god [7, 8], yet many scientists, especially among the chemists and physicists but even among some biologists have such a religious belief. i can think of only three resolutions of this paradox. the scientist's god either is not an intelligent entity or has no control over the universe. the second is to accept the concept of science as defined here with a part of one's mind and that of god with another, with an impermeable barrier between the two parts. the third is either not to be a scientist or not to believe in god, i.e. to be an atheist, or euphemistically, a nonbeliever since among many people `atheist' is a dirty word. the funny thing about these solutions is that they all work! the troublemakers are the zealots, i.e. the proponents of intelligent design on the one hand, and the russian communists' idiotic attempt to prohibit religion on the other. a firm distinction between the so-called hard and soft sciences, e.g. physics and sociology, can also not be made simply because it is easier to test reality in some more than in other sciences. science itself, therefore, answers our question with a simple but firm no. there cannot be one method that every kind of scientific studyin the field, the library, or the laboratorymust follow; the things scientists are curious about differ too much from one another for all of them to be studied according to the same or any set of rules or algorithms. medewar's caricature of the scientific paper boils down to a matter of beating a dead horse. he labels it inductivist because the authors often present their results without comment and reserve interpretation of them for the discussion. in the first place, this isn't induction. even bacon, its chief proponent, saw induction mainly as a way to separate particulars from one another into groups of similarities. this is exactly what the taxonomist does. but even if it were induction the meaning of which seems to depend on who defines it ; , what's unscientific about saying, "here's what we found. how would you interpret them? then we'll tell you what we think"? shouldn't a scientific paper be at least as much fun to read as a good detective story? there are plenty of things wrong with the way many scientific papers are written freight-train adjectives, misplaced clauses, redundancies, mistakes in grammar and or syntax, teleologisms, etc. ; , but presenting the results without comment is not one of them. i have a hunch that medewar was not a lover of who-done-its! the only true scientific method is to use whatever tools we can to make observations, ask and answer questions, solve problems, test a theory, etc., and it and paradise poker.
Trate various ways that ecosystems provide important services for us and the environment. identify the five stations around the room. when they arrive at a station, all the members of the team should read the directions completely before setting up the simulation. students should then set up and run their simulation. tell them that on day 2, each team will run its simulation for the class. each team should discuss the expected outcome of the simulation. each member of the team should also answer the questions listed under "think about it." note: remind the students that after they try their simulation, they have to get it ready for the next day, so they might have to dry their equipment and or supplies or replace some of the parts. stations #2, #4 and #5 require 24 hours to complete. let the students at these three stations know that they will not need to run the simulation again on day 2 but that they'll have to explain what they did on day 1. 2. day 2: presenting the simulations and matching the analogies. distribute the "the secret's out!" page to each student. explain to the students that each team will have a few minutes to explain their simulation to the class. ask each team to briefly review its procedures, perform the simulation or explain the results of an overnight simulation ; and discuss the results. students should provide information to the class that answers the "what happened?" and "think about it" sections on their handout. after watching each presentation, have the students use "the secret's out!" page to identify the ecosystem service being demonstrated in the simulation. discuss student responses. answers: a--2, b--3, c--1, d--5, e--4 ; 3. review and summarize. when all the teams have completed their presentations, review and summarize the different ways ecosystems provide important services to people and to the planet. the list should include flood control, water filtering and purification, erosion control, oxygen production and climate control.
Offerings of their own for tour groups, and their charms taken in during breaks or as a scheduled part of the tour ; can help make a gulf coast tour all the more enjoyable. making the trip between florida and the gulf coast is relatively easy, operators say. they schedule several breaks, of course, but there are no transportation impediments: it's just a straight shot across the panhandle and interstate 10. of course, with florida being such a big state, geography plays a role: a tour originating in miami is different than one that starts out in tallahassee. good time tours out of pensacola is close enough 120 miles away ; that it can offer trips to biloxi where guests don't even stay overnight in a hotel. they just go to one casino for five hours and then head home. "we take on average 100, 000 people a year [on such day trips], " said jerri smith, general manager of good time tours. bus fare is between only and . but wait, it gets better: once they arrive at the casino, the guests are given and sometimes a lunch buffet. the casinos, eager to get customers to the tables, underwrite the transportation cost. once a month, good time tours also offers overnight trips. a typical one, scheduled for november, offers visits to four casinos, hotel accommodations and dinner. also part of that and in the spirit of enjoying the entire gulf coast ; is a tour of bellingrath gardens south of i-10 in theodore, ala. ; and its christmas light display on the way home. good time tours officials certainly are experts when it comes to florida tour companies heading to biloxi. "some of the casinos like bus groups and some of them don't, " smith observed. a lot of the attitude is determined by fluctuation in casino attendance the more a casino needs players, the more eager it is to draw in crowds of buses ; . good time tours heads to casino magic and the grand casino, both of which are hospitable to bus groups. as for logistics: smith said there are adequate places to fuel buses along the route to and from biloxi and good parking for buses along the gulf coast stops. good time tours has one particular problem, though: the casino-subsidized bus trips are so cheap that some guests get aboard with no intention of ever gambling; instead, they are using the bus as an inexpensive ferry to the airport or va hospital. "they kind of try to use us as greyhound, " smith said. "because of that, we don't allow any luggage on the buses for day trips." certainly, when you consider the attractions of the gulf coast, the casinos certainly are the first things that come to mind. after all, in this aspect, florida can't come close to providing what the gulf coast provides, and many floridians are eager to try their luck at the gaming tables. among the best known is the beau rivage in biloxi, which travel and leisure magazine readers once again have listed as one of the world's best hotels. it has a 75, 000 square-foot casino and a specially designed place for tour buses to park! ; . Two auroral 1m focal length ebert fastie spectrometers have been recon gured with new controlling hardware at poker tournaments flat research range, alaska 64 n, 145 w ; and at nordlysstasjonen in adventdalen, svalbard 78 n, 15 e ; , respectively. the use of high resolution stepping motors mounted to the grating shafts of the instruments combined with either a laser position tracking system or an incremental encoder are described and discussed. both instruments were set up to measure on multiple wavelength regions of auroral emissions. it is found that the overall operational performance of the instruments as auroral spectrometers has reached a higher level. particularly from the standpoint of exibility in operation, mechanical stability of components, and simplicity of construction and adjustment. the ability of one spectrometer to operate on several wavelength regions with high spectral resolution, speed and sensitivity has gained new possibilities in the eld of auroral spectroscopy. in 1889 herman ebert described a spectrometer using a spherical mirror and a plane grating. his sketch is reproduced in fig. 1. and shows the instrument as a photographic spectrograph. this optical system, the ebert monochromator, formed sharp images for a very narrow spectral range. later in 1952 william g. fastie improved the performance of the instrument, using curved slits instead of straight slits fastie, 1952 ; . problems of astigmatism became less, and consequently the resolution of the instrument was improved. the instrument is now known as the ebert-fastie spectrometer. 1 and poker strategy.

Will wash out the local peculiar velocity and leave the bulk velocity. a requirement of the algorithm is that the grid velocity be smooth and therefore, the smoothing radius must be set large enough to remove large gradients in the global velocity field. typically, the largest gradients are found near shocks, which are resolved in approximately two grid cells, as demonstrated with the sod shock tube test and the sedov-taylor blast-wave test in chapter 2. in practice, the smoothing radius is chosen to be several times larger than the shock resolution. based on hydrodynamic tests described later in this chapter and also in the next chapter, a value of r 8 grid cells is found to be the best solution. setting the smoothing radius too small explicitly affects the solutions to the grid velocity equation eq. [5.11] ; and the local total energy equation eq. [5.14] ; , and this generally results in additional scatter and oscillations near shocks. on the contrary, choosing too large a value reduces the effectiveness of the algorithm for then, the magnitude of the grid velocity will decrease and the magnitude of the local velocity will be larger in general. note that since the smoothing radius and shock broadening length are fixed in grid units, the effectiveness of the moving frame algorithm to reduce mach numbers and resolve shocks increases with higher resolution. the weight function can be set to unity in the simplest case, but it may be desirable to weight the contributions of the global velocity field not just on locality but also on the properties of the physical environment. in general, cold regions are more likely to suffer from the high mach number problem simply due to the fact that the sound speed is small. consider the case of a moving shock front. if we choose the reference frame to be that of the shock, then the cold gas in front of the shock will be moving supersonically in this frame and have high mach numbers. however, if we choose the reference frame to be that of the cold ambient medium, then the ambient gas will be subsonic. while the postshock medium will be moving fast with respect to this reference frame, it will have low mach numbers since the postshock gas is hot. hence, a weight function wn 1 max tn , tmin ; , 5.33 and poker betting.

Industry, e.g., automotive engineering and manufacturing engineering? ironically, michigan's efforts in these more traditional areas actually deteriorated during the decades following the war. although the college built important facilities such as the automotive laboratory on the north campus with its array of sophisticated automobile engine test cells, it was not generally regarded as a national leader. in numerous discussions with technology leaders in my role as dean of engineering during the 1980s, it became apparent that the college had decided to focus its efforts on rather conventional, even mundane, areas of research such as dynamometer testing and conventional combustion experiments, while other programs such as mit and uc-berkeley moved into very novel, science-based areas that would catch the wave created by pollution control requirements in the 1970s. while michigan continued to hire rather traditional mechanical engineering faculty, mit was hiring experts in areas of statistical mechanics, physical chemistry, and computer simulation. similarly, in the area of manufacturing, michigan focused on areas such as machine tool development and mechanical design rather than the emerging areas of numerically controlled machines and cad cam. this stood in sharp contrast with the college's leadingedge activities in high-tech areas such as aerospace, electronics, and nuclear energy.

The language feature most often associated with object-oriented programming is inheritance. inheritance is the ability to define a new class that is a modified version of an existing class. it is called "inheritance" because the new class inherits the methods of the existing class. extending this metaphor, the existing class is called the parent class and the new class is called the child. as an example, let's say we want a class to represent a "hand, " that is, the set of cards held by one player. a hand is similar to a deck: both are made up of a set of cards, and both require operations like adding and removing cards. a hand is also different from a deck; there are operations we want for hands that don't make sense for a deck. for example, in poker tournaments we might compare two hands to see which one wins. in bridge, we might compute a score for a hand in order to make a bid. this relationship between classes--similar, but different--lends itself to inheritance. the definition of a child class is like other class definitions, but the name of the parent class appears in parentheses: class hand deck ; : """represents a hand of playing cards""" this definition indicates that hand inherits from deck; that means we can use methods like pop card and add card for hands as well as decks. hand also inherits the init method from deck, but it doesn't really do what we want: instead of populating the hand with 52 new cards, the init method for hands should initialize cards with an empty list. if we provide an init method in the hand class, it overrides the one in the deck class: # inside class hand: def init self, label ''.
